Our sixth grade students were able to spend a week at Outdoor Lab in the mountains of Colorado and in art class we created art based on the experience. The students were able to write poetry describing an event or a memory from the trip and the art was also tied to the poem. The students were required to depict mountains and incorporate their poetry.

Pick an artist, any artist!
Students in 2nd grade were working on a project concerning portraits. I have these fabulous famous artist cards that include a self portrait of the artist. Students were able to spend time learning about the artist, drawing the artist and practicing typical facial proportions. Students did this work in their sketchbooks as an intro to an art project and to reference later in the year.
Later, students explored some other examples of portraits. This time students were asked to determine how the figure in the composition feels and why. They also had time to recreate the image. I was particularly impressed with one table in the room that recreated the portrait below.

A Brief History of Education and why the ARTS are so important!
Sir Ken Robinson sums up my opinions on education quite nicely.
